The Exchange #11 From Sawmill to Structure

On Monday, 19 May 2025, NTB hosted The Exchange #11 From Sawmill to Structure.
This time we visited Vastern Timber for an exclusive tour of their Sawmill in Studley and Mill in Wootton Bassett. During our visit, the Vastern team guided us through their entire process, from sourcing timber to its sale. They shared expert tips on how to responsibly specify timber products for both external and internal use, supporting us in sourcing more local timber for our projects.
After lunch, we heard from Tom Kinsella, the traditional carpenter. He discussed the role of oak and pine for structural framing in contemporary architecture. The session covered traditional detailing and jointing and essential considerations for designers when incorporating timber framing into their designs.
