The Exchange #23 Earthen Floors

On Monday 21 September 2026, Neighbourhood Toolbox hosted The Exchange at Tom Graham Workshop in Frome.

The workshop explored the use of earthen floors, combining practical guidance on specification and detailing with a hands-on session exploring how an earthen floor is made.

We heard from Jeffrey Hart of The Earthen Floor Company, who introduced the principles and applications of earthen floors, drawing on projects and sharing practical insights into how they can be specified and detailed. The practical workshop then walked attendees through the different stages involved in making an earthen floor, providing an opportunity to get our hands dirty and understand the materials, techniques and processes involved.

After lunch, Tom Graham shared his live experiments with earth, discussing his approach, experiences and observations from working with the material to develop new natural products.
